The Inter-College Youth Literary Fest 2016 organized by the Department of English, Faculty of Media Studies and Humanities, Manav Rachna International University gave students of Delhi-NCR colleges the ideal platform to express themselves and enhance their knowledge of English literature and language. The fest attracted around 100 students from various institutions such as Delhi University, MD University, Rohtak; Guru Nanak Dev University, I.P. University as well as students from the various faculties of MRIU and MRU. The occasion witnessed the gracious presence of Chief Guest Dr I.D. Shukla, MD, Griffins Language Solutions: Institute of Linguistic Studies, Chandigarh; Dr. N.C. Wadhwa, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, MRIU along with Faculty members.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr N.C. Wadhwa encouraged the youth to enrich their knowledge of English which he claimed would help to establish themselves in a fiercely competitive world. “As he explained, “We are a Commonwealth nation with English as an inherited legacy that has come to us from the British nearly two centuries back. English is a link language not just globally but among all the states in India.” Though a nascent department, the English Department would be launching their Masters in English program in July, Dr N.C. Wadhwa informed the audience at large.
Addressing the student gathering on the ‘Why What and How of Literature’, Dr. I.D. Shukla quoted extensively from the works of William Shakespeare and ignited among the audience a passion for good literature, when he said, “A novel is a small universe into itself. So the more we read, the more we stand to gain experience of humanity.” He also added that literature is a cure-all against the difficulties, diseases and stresses of life and inspired students to delve into various works of literature to help them develop the power of understanding human beings. The Literary Fest unfolded a wide array of events such as English Literary Quiz, Poetry Recitation, Just a Minute (JAM), English Debate, Short Story Writing. And as a source of entertainment, an English Classic Movie was also screened for the students.
