Department of Humanities and Language organized an ‘Invited Lecture’ on the topic ‘Importance of English for Budding Scientists and Engineers’ on February 21, 2017. The resource person for the same was Professor Mukesh, Department of English, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He has more than two decades of teaching experience in English Literature as well as English Language teaching. In his credit, he has authored one book and many more research papers. Moreover, he has been awarded Fulbright Fellowship for his Doctoral Research from Harvard University and California University, USA.
The objective of the program was to sensitize the students about the importance of English in their professional life. Emphasizing on the importance, the speaker said that if a person is only technically sound but is not mindful towards humanistic approach; he might behave like a Robot or Nerd in his family and society as well. It is the need of hour that we speak or write in English for functional purpose and not for Elitism. We, as an Indian, should understand that English has maintained its global language status and it is being spoken in more than 50 countries. Now it is not a colonial language. We, therefore, should speak English in our own way i.e. called as an Indian English.
This session was followed by the students healthy discussion with the speaker with their questions and queries related to English speaking, writing, reading and how to boost up confidence while speaking in English.
The session commenced by offering of sapling to the Guest Speaker by HoD, Department of Humanities and Language and Director, Industry Interaction, Professor Jaideep Singh. The program was anchored by Dr Chhavi Kulshreshtha, Assistant Professor of the Department. The session concluded by vote of thanks, this was given by Dr Akhilesh Kr Dwivedi, Associate HoD, Department of Humanities and Language.
