The Manav Rachna Public Lecture Series is a platform where the University invites eminent people to speak on important social, cultural, and legal issues, which are of topical and public interest. Our distinguished speakers in the past have included judges, leading lawyers, social workers, business leaders and lawmakers.

The Eighth Manav Rachna Public Lecture hosted by the Faculty of Law was delivered by Gourab Banerji, Senior Advocate. Mr Banerji spoke on “Continuing relevance of Fundamental Duties in these COVID-19 times”. Due to the pandemic the lecture was for the first time an online-only event.

PROFILE OF THE GUEST SPEAKER

Gourab Banerji is a senior advocate practising at the Supreme Court of India, with an emphasis on commercial matters, and in particularly international arbitration. He is also a Barrister with Essex Court Chambers in London. Mr Banerji studied law at Magdalene College, at Cambridge University securing a first class in the law tripos. He was awarded the Noah Hunter Dias Prize in Law and was called to the bar in 1990 from Lincoln’s Inn. He has been practising law for the past 31 years and was designated senior advocate at the age of 36, perhaps one of the youngest. He is a former Additional Solicitor General of India, having served the position with great distinction from 2009 until 2014. Mr Banerji is the Vice Chairman of the UNCTRAL National Coordination Committee for India and is also a national correspondent for India to UNCITRAL’s clout system.
