E-conference on ‘Management & Prevention of NCDS-A New Paradigm’ as part of Poshan Maah 2021
The Department of Nutrition & Dietetics, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, MRIIRS in association with Azzura Pharmaconutrition successfully conducted a 4-day e-workshop on ‘Management & Prevention of NCD’s- A New Paradigm’. The workshop began with a warm welcome note by Prof. (Dr.) Moattar Raza Rizvi, Dean (FAHS) which was followed by a speech by Prof. (Dr.) G.L. Khanna (PVC, FAHS) apprised the audience about the relevance of the right nutrition for the human body. The chief guest for the workshop was Ms. Anita Jatana, President of IDA, Delhi. She explained the role of the right nutrition and balanced diet in ensuring healthy living right from the mother’s womb to adulthood.
The first speaker on Day 1 of the workshop was Dr. Srinivas H, Assistant Professor at BGS Global Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore. His talk gave an interesting insight into how different genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors are predisposing an individual to obesity. The second speaker for the day was Dr. Thirumurthy Velpandian, a Professor & In-charge of the Ocular Pharmacology & Pharmacy Division, AIIMS, Delhi. He stressed the importance of maintaining a critical combination of palmito-oleic acid, linoleic acid, α-linolenic acid, and oleic acid in preventing insulin resistance.
Day-2 started with the lecture of Dr. Ambalam M Chandrasekaran, COALESCE Fellow (NIH Postdoctoral Research Fellow) Centre for Chronic Disease Control, New Delhi who delivered a talk on different levels of prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). His prime focus was on the interlinkage of yoga and cardiac rehabilitation. The second speaker, Dr. Naval K. Vikram, M.D., MNAMS, FICP, Professor at Metabolic Research Group, Department of Medicine, AIIMS, New Delhi gave an insightful talk on the risk factors associated with growing NCDs.
Day 3 of the workshop started with Dr. Bhavna Gandhi, the first speaker for the day who thoroughly explained ‘Emerging Nutrition Trends in CardioVascular Diseases’. The second session was then taken up by Ms. Shilpa Chaddha Thakur, Chief Consultant Dietetics, Asian Hospital on ‘Nutraceuticals for Cardiovascular Health’. Wherein, she emphasized various Nutraceuticals commonly present in everyone’s kitchen. She thoroughly explained the importance of incorporating such foods into the regular diet to maintain health.
The concluding day or the fourth day of E-CNE started with an overview of the experiences shared by various eminent speakers over the last three days. It was followed by the welcome address from Dr. Divya Sanghi, Associate professor and HoD, FAHS, MRIIRS. Ms. Shiny Surendran, M.Sc. FSMD, Grad diploma in sports nutrition (Intl Olympic committee) Sports and Preventive Health Dietician Executive Committee Member-ASNFS Chennai delivered a talk on gut health. She talked about the importance of gut health on brain activity and thereby its effect on developing various disease conditions. Ms. Rohini Raman, RD, IOC qualified Sports Nutritionist, Lead Nutritionist – Sports Authority of India Trivandrum was the second speaker of the day. She gave an insightful talk on the relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S).
There were more than 250 registered participants for consecutively four days. All the sessions ended with a Q&A round. The valedictory function involved the vote of thanks by Prof. (Dr) Moattar Raza Rizvi, Dean, FAHS, MRIIRS to the speakers of the four-day ECNE and the participants.
