Doping Control: Ethical Issues and International Policy Prospectus
Guest Lecture is a way of enriching students with the latest updates of the Industries and Technicalities. At Manav Rachna International University, emphasis is given on not only making the students academically brilliant, but true leaders and team players, thus preparing them for the real life corporate world. This is done by inviting people from industries and top institutions to provide valuable information to the students. We invite eminent personalities form various industries and institutions to lend valuable information from their experiences to the students. The Students are bestowed with knowledge about Industry needs, latest technical updates and avenues for higher studies as well.
Keeping in mind these objectives, a guest lecture was organized by the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Applied Science for graduate and postgraduate students of Nutrition and Dietetics and Physiotherapy, where Dr. Munish Chander, delivered an expert talk on “Doping Control: Ethical Issues and International Policy Prospectus” on 20th January, 2017. Prof. G. L. Khanna welcomed and introduced the speaker.
Dr Munish Chander is Vice President and Director of the TCI Foundation. He was the Member of Medical & Anti Doping Commission Commonwealth Games Federation United Kingdom. He is the CEO of Apex Anti Doping Management Services. Previously he has served as Dy. DG (Director General) & Head Anti Doping Department Commonwealth Games 2010. He has also served as Head, Anti Doping Department Asian Games Doha (Qatar) and Head Regional Anti Doping Organization Africa Zone VI. Sir has more than 20 years of experience in anti doping.
He talked about historic prospects of doping and testing which started from 1920 to 2012. He explained the students about the problem of Doping, its clinical aspects, various methods and analysis. Focus was also given on the Ethical issues of Doping and law prohibited drugs which the players use. The resource person explained about different kinds of doping substances taken by the players like stimuli, steroids, blood doping, human growth hormones and gene doping. He also emphasized on designed steroids like tetrahydrogestrinone, which are designed in such a manner that they cannot be detected by the laboratory. The students were also explained about the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA), its evolution and establishment. He shared that athletes should have principle of strict responsibility for anything prohibited found in their body. Any athlete, who violates the anti doping rule, shall not be allowed to participate in various state, national and international level competitions for 4 years. The students also learned about the International Policy Prospectus of Doping, International Olympic Association (IOA), National Anti Doping Organization and functions and roles of these organizations. He also shared the list of prohibited substances with students which is revised annually by the World Anti Doping Agency.
Prof. G.L. Khanna shared that such events give platform to students to gain more knowledge and familiarize them with the various developments taking place in Sports Nutrition arena. The department will continue to organize such lectures to equip the students with latest learning techniques and updates. Overall it was an informative opportunity of practical exposure for the students.
