Dietetics Day Celebrations
Dietetics day celebrations observed at Manav Rachna International University to create awareness about nutrition and good health!
Indian Dietetics Day is celebrated throughout India since the year 2014 on 10th January every year. In view of the same, Manav Rachna International University, Faculty of Applied Science, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, celebrated Dietetics Day on 10th January, 2017 in the campus here today.
Dietetics day is celebrated every year and this time the theme for the day was ‘Consult a Dietitian, Get Fooducated’. This theme is being followed all over India, in all hospitals, Institutes and Organizations. The objective behind the celebrations was to create awareness and impart knowledge regarding food and nutrition among the majority of people.
On this occasion, the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at MRIU organized a seminar on Nutrigenomics of Type II Diabetes mellitus’ which was delivered by Dr. Shilpa S. Chapadgoankar, Associate Professor, Faculty of Biotechnology, MRIU. She discussed on Diabetes, its ill effects, types and risk factors involved focusing on the gene-nutrient interactions, impact of diet on disease susceptibility genes and epigenome alterations. This was followed by a Zumba session to make students understand the importance of physical activity in enhancing and maintaining good health.
Post the Zumba session, three entertaining events were organized–IEC material competition which included posters, charts, developing an app, flashcards, leaflets on the theme ‘A lot can happen, when you eat your colors’; Article writing competition on the theme ‘What makes a diet easy to remember’ and Healthy recipe competition on the theme ‘Cooking without Fire’. These engaging competitions were followed by Nutrition counseling with the help of ‘Health Buddy App’. The finale of the event was Nutrition Challenge Quiz followed by Prize distribution ceremony. Dr. M.M.Kathuria, Trustee, MREI and Dean FAS distributed prizes to the winners.
Addressing the gathering at the event, Prof. Dr G.L Khanna, Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Manav Rachna International University, said, “It is a matter of great pride to be a part of the celebrations of Indian Dietetics day. Considering the rise in problems such as obesity and diabetes, I urge everyone to take good care of their health as well as of their near and dear ones. Students of Nutrition and Dietetics should be pro-active in providing solutions to health related problems to benefit society at large.”
